North East Business For A People’s Vote Campaign

We are all following the Brexit news with great concern, regardless of our views on Prime Minister Theresa May’s plan, no deal, remain and so on.

Now it appears there is serious deadlock in parliament and anything can happen in the coming days, weeks and months.

Many have recently become convinced of the merits of a further referendum, particularly in the event of this deadlock continuing. Many also believe the decision should go back to the people regardless as it is such a momentous one.

We recognise the risks and downsides, but accept that in the event of deadlock there may be no other way to resolve the impasse.

Furthermore, the public now are better informed than they were in 2016 and have more clearly defined options available to them and are more aware of the vast consequences of leaving the EU.

As this is a decision that will affect us all for decades to come, we need to do all possible to get it right now, even if this means an extension of the uncertainty in the short term.

Most businesses wish to stay in the single market and customs union – so-called frictionless trade – and we note that all government impact assessments confirm that we will be worse off with any option other than the status quo, particularly in the North East.

The journey to a solution in the national interest is likely to involve an extension to Article 50 (if not revoking it completely as we are entitled to do without EU approval). This is all the more likely now that the Prime Minister’s deal seems unable to command enough support in Parliament and it therefore makes no sense for business people to continue to support it.

In the circumstances outlined above, we the undersigned therefore support calling a second referendum.
